Therapy Dog work is a hugely fulfilling volunteer endeavor not only for the handler, but also for the dog. A Therapy Dog is a dog that has shown an outstanding temperament around people, children, and other animals. These dogs want to be with people. They adore children and love the attention given to them.

Therapy Dogs are not Service Dogs. They don’t help people in a physical sense. They provide emotional support and stimulation through visits where people pet them, talk to them, hold them, and love them.

Blue Dog Creature Coaching’s Therapy Dog Training helps you and your dog prepare for therapy dog certification. Weekly classes will involve an explanation and practice of the various tasks that must be performed during the therapy dog test.

Therapy Dogs International (TDI) is the nation’s leading Therapy Dog organization and has over 21,000 dog/handler teams registered. Purebred and mixed breed dogs are eligible to become Therapy Dogs. A dog must pass the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Test and pass a temperament test to become a TDI Therapy Dog. Therapy Dogs visit with the elderly, with children, and with the sick. They visit nursing homes, schools, libraries, hospitals, hospice, and shelters. They provide a special service that on a Therapy Dog can do.

• This class is a preparation class for animal assisted therapy certification and working with your dog as a visiting team.
• Each week, we will cover required elements of the certification tests, including, sitting politely for petting/grooming, being touch/handled by strangers, and mock visits.
• We will also discuss dealing with visiting stresses, both human and canine and choosing appropriate visiting situations for you and your dog.
• Dogs must have successfully passed a Canine Good Citizen test or have permission of instructor.
• The certification exam and testing fees are not included with the class and must be arranged and paid separately to the certifying organization/evaluator of your choosing.

Classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Class size is limited for individualized attention for you and your dog, so don’t wait to register.
